Stainless steel jewellery care: the simple, honest guide
You have fallen for a gold-tone necklace you never want to take off, and one question keeps coming back: will it tarnish? Can you keep it on in the shower, at the pool, in the sea? At Histoire de plaire, our small boutique in Crans-Montana, we advise customers on this jewellery every day – so here are our answers, with no over-the-top promises, just what really works day to day.
Stainless steel has one quality that makes life easier: it needs very little care. No fuss, no expensive products. A little common sense is enough.
Why stainless steel jewellery won't tarnish
The big difference from classic silver or some costume jewellery is that stainless steel won't tarnish and won't turn black when in contact with air, water or perspiration. Where a silver chain can darken over time, stainless steel keeps its colour.
That is exactly what makes it so practical for everyday wear: you put it on, you forget about it, and it stays itself. On our product pages, simply look for the mention “stainless steel”.
Shower, pool, sea: can you really do it all?
This is THE question we are asked most often. The short answer: yes, stainless steel is waterproof, in fresh water as well as salt water. A few simple habits will, however, extend the shine of your jewellery.
In the shower
No worries about keeping your stainless steel jewellery on in the shower. Soaps, shower gels and shampoos can leave a slight film over time – an occasional rinse with clean water is enough to bring back the shine.
At the pool
Chlorine is the only real “opponent”. Stainless steel handles it well, but very frequent and prolonged exposure can tire the shine. Our tip: rinse your jewellery with clean water when you get out of the pool.
In the sea
Salt water does not frighten stainless steel. Just like your skin, rinse your jewellery with fresh water after swimming to remove salt and sand. Pat it dry gently with a cloth and you are done.
Sensitive skin: nickel-free and hypoallergenic
If your ears or skin react easily, stainless steel is often sensitive skin's best friend. Our stainless steel jewellery is nickel-free (or releases a negligible amount of nickel) and hypoallergenic.
This is especially true for earrings, which are in direct, prolonged contact with a sensitive area. Every skin is unique, of course – but it is by far the most tolerant material in our selection.
Everyday care: three steps, no more
- Gentle cleaning: a soft cloth (microfibre ideally) with a little lukewarm water. For more marked pieces, a drop of mild soap, then rinse with clean water.
- Drying: wipe well before storing. Dry jewellery stays shinier.
- Storing: keep it safe, in a pouch or a box, to avoid scratches against other jewellery.
What we avoid: abrasive products, scouring sponges, harsh chemical cleaners. Stainless steel does not need them.
Stainless steel or costume jewellery: what's the difference?
In our boutique, you will find two families. Stainless steel jewellery: pieces that won't tarnish, resist water and suit sensitive skin. And more fashion-led pieces that follow the season's trends at a small price.
Both have their place. To know which one you are holding, there is just one reflex: the “stainless steel” mention on the product page.
How to choose the right stainless steel piece
- Looking for an everyday piece, to wear in the shower and in the sea? Go for stainless steel.
- Have sensitive skin? Favour stainless steel, especially for earrings.
- Love stacking? Mix several stainless steel necklaces and bracelets for a boho look that fears nothing.
- Still hesitating? Our whole selection is in the jewellery category.
